Industry Odisha Bureau, Sept 21: Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall this week as a well-marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the system lay over the east central and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal at 5:30 am on September 21. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours.
The system may further strengthen into a deep depression over the west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the following 24 hours. It is expected to reach near the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast around September 23.
The developing system is likely to trigger intense rainfall across both states. The IMD has forecast very heavy rain on September 23 and 24. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue in different parts of the state until September 27.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to receive very heavy rainfall on September 22. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely on September 23 and 24. Thunderstorms and strong surface winds may also accompany.
The system has developed as the southwest monsoon enters its withdrawal phase in parts of India. The IMD has indicated that monsoon withdrawal may begin from parts of Gujarat over the next two to three days.
