Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 17: Odisha has taken a significant step toward strengthening India’s high-tech industrial footprint. Additional Chief Secretary, Energy and E&IT, Vishal Dev, inspected a major semiconductor facility on Wednesday.
Dev, along with senior officials, reviewed the operational readiness of RIR Power Electronics Limited’s Silicon Carbide plant. The Bhubaneswar facility marks a milestone in India’s semiconductor journey.
Reactors Commissioned, Commercial Launch Awaited
During the visit, Dev reviewed the completed installation of advanced SiC Epitaxial Wafer Manufacturing Reactors. These reactors form the technological core of the facility’s operations.
He described the development as reflective of Odisha’s expanding role within India’s semiconductor ecosystem. The project, he added, aligns closely with the national Viksit Bharat vision.
Dev noted the significance of RIR Power Electronics choosing Odisha for this pioneering venture. It marks the country’s first vertically integrated Silicon Carbide semiconductor facility.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustained industrial support going forward. The goal, he said, is fostering a genuinely self-reliant manufacturing environment in Odisha.
Rs 618-Crore Investment, Phased Rollout
The facility anchors a phased investment of Rs 618 crore by RIR Power Electronics. It follows a Silicon Carbide-to-System manufacturing model built around layered production stages.
The SiC Epitaxial process forms the foundational stage of this integrated framework. It enables downstream production of advanced power semiconductor devices including MOSFETs and diodes.
Key reactors, power connections, utilities, and supporting infrastructure have all been fully commissioned. Commercial operations will begin once remaining statutory and regulatory approvals are finalised.
Why Silicon Carbide Matters For Energy And Beyond
Silicon Carbide technology offers distinct advantages over conventional silicon-based semiconductor chips. It supports higher thermal limits and significantly improved switching efficiency.
The technology also delivers reduced energy losses, making it valuable across energy-intensive applications. These properties position SiC as critical to next-generation power electronics manufacturing.
Output from the Bhubaneswar facility is expected to serve multiple strategic sectors nationally. These include electric vehicles, renewable energy storage systems, and defence applications.
Aerospace and data centre infrastructure are also expected to draw on this supply. The facility positions Odisha as a crucial node in electronics supply chains.
This spans both domestic manufacturing networks and international semiconductor trade relationships. Odisha’s growing semiconductor footprint reinforces its emergence as a high-tech industrial hub.
