Industry Odisha Bureau, Sept 17: In latest news, East Coast Railway (ECoR) has crossed the 100 million tonnes (MT) milestone in freight unloading in the current financial year 2026-27. With this, it has become the first railway zone in India to achieve this feat.
According to ECoR, the milestone was achieved 17 days earlier than during the corresponding period of the previous financial year. This indicated improved freight handling and operational efficiency.
The zone recorded a 9.8 percent rise in freight release tonnage compared with the same period last year. The growth was supported by improved wagon handling and faster release of freight rakes, particularly BOXN and BOBRN wagons.
The release of BOXN wagons increased by 7.3 percent, while BOBRN wagon release rose by 9.8 percent. ECoR said the improvement reflects faster wagon turnaround and better utilisation of freight assets.
The railway zone has also recorded a 3.9 percent increase in freight loading, while freight earnings have grown by 3.2 percent during the period.
Notably, ECoR’s freight network supports industries and businesses by transporting essential commodities and raw materials. Faster unloading and wagon release can help improve the movement of goods and rail based logistics.
