Industry Odisha Bureau,Sep 13: Jindal Steel has earned Guinness World Records recognition. The honour covers the world’s longest road built using processed steel slag aggregates. The project sits at Raigarh in Chhattisgarh. It stretches 1.85 kilometres across four lanes. The achievement points to a bigger industrial question. India’s steel sector is generating growing volumes of by-product material.
Jindal Steel Uses 2 Lakh Tonnes of Slag
Jindal Steel built the road with CSIR-Central Road Research Institute. Around 2 lakh tonnes of processed steel slag went into construction. The road relied exclusively on these processed aggregates. No natural aggregates were used in the final structure. The collaboration combined industrial material with road-engineering expertise.
Steel Slag Replaces Natural Aggregates
Steel slag is a by-product generated during steel manufacturing. Scientific processing converts it into usable road aggregate. This substitution reduced the project’s dependence on quarrying. Untreated slag cannot simply replace conventional materials. The processing step remains central to its use here.
Cost and Durability Claims Attached to the Technology
Steel slag roads are reported as 30-40% more cost-effective. They are also said to last three times longer than bitumen roads. Both claims come from the project material itself. Actual performance can vary with project conditions and specifications. Reduced maintenance needs are cited as a possible benefit. Developers also describe the material as suited to varied climates.
India’s Steel Growth Could Push Slag Output Higher
India is targeting 300 million tonnes of steel production by 2030-31. Steel slag generation could consequently reach 60 million tonnes. Expanding capacity means expanding by-product volumes too. Finding productive uses for this material becomes more relevant. Road construction offers one demonstrated route, though not the only one.
Circular Economy Framing
Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel Limited, linked the project to circularity. He said the achievement shows how industry can “transform industrial co-products into valuable resources.” Jindal also heads the Indian Steel Association. He described waste-to-wealth as a government focus area. The framing positions slag reuse within India’s broader resource-efficiency push.
Government Ministries Back Wider Adoption
The Steel Ministry is promoting steel slag road technology more broadly. It is working alongside the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is also involved. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of Science and Technology, called the project evidence of indigenous innovation. The cooperation signals institutional interest, not confirmed nationwide rollout.
The Scalability Question
The Raigarh project demonstrates technical feasibility at a defined scale. Whether steel slag roads expand further depends on economics and engineering fit. Rising steel output will keep by-product volumes climbing regardless. Converting that material into infrastructure use remains a work in progress. The record sets a benchmark rather than a finished solution.
