Industry Odisha Bureau, July 6: Neymar Jr. announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s shocking 2-1 defeat to Norway in the round 16 of FIFA World Cup 2026. The decision brings an end to the 34-year-old’s 16-year international career. During this period, he became Brazil’s all time leading scorer with 80 goals and 129 appearances.
Neymar’s final appearance for Brazil was in the second half as a substitute at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Notably, this was the same venue where he made his international debut in 2010. He scored a late penalty against Norway, but the goal was not enough to ensure Brazil’s continuation in the tournament.
Even though Neymar has announced retirement from international cricket, he will continue to play football for Santos FC.
Brazil’s defeat in the tournament also extended the team’s poor record against European opponents. The five-time champions have not won against an European team in FIFA since defeating Germany in the 2002 finals. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti described the defeat as painful. He also said that it should motivate the team moving forward.
After the match, Ancelotti said, “Everyone is deeply disappointed. We may not have had a spectacular World Cup, but I believe we had a good tournament. We even deserved to win today’s game.”
Ancelotti took charge of Brazil just a year ago, and is under contract until the 2030 FIFA World Cup. He said that the current team is capable of competing at the highest level. “I don’t think this is the end. He also said that this was the beginning of a new cycle.
To be mentioned, Norway secured victory through two late goals after Brazil missed a penalty when Bruno Guimaraes failed to convert from the spot. Neymar did score a penalty in stoppage time, which failed to secure Brazil’s victory. Brazil’s last victory in the FIFA World Cup was in 2002. Their wait for another triumph will continue beyond 28 years now.
