Industry Odisha Bureau, Jun 30: Registering its reportedly biggest win in FIFA World Cup, Paraguay football team reportedly knocked out four-time world champions Germany team scoring 4-3 on penalty kicks today (IST) and reportedly advanced to the ongoing World Cup Round of 16.
International media reported that, “It’s one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history, after the two teams
were tied 1-1 after 120 minutes. Paraguay’s national team’s Jose Canale converted the penalty to register a decisive victory for the team.”
Reportedly, “Paraguay had reached the quarter-finals in 2010 and had not qualified since then.”
Media reports said that, “Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron back in the side after his suspension, stunned all with a quick move down the right before teammate Julio Enciso powered home his header to score his country’s first-ever goal in the knockout stage of a World Cup.”
So far, the German team is concerned, media reported that, “Germany’s attacking midfielder Florian Richard Wirtz floated a cross into the box and his teammate Kai Lukas Havertz levelled it with a glancing header. Wirtz also delivered an almost identical cross in the 78th minute of the match, but Havertz’s header was blocked by Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill as the game spilled over into extra time.”
Narrating further, international media reports stated, “German defender Jonathan Tah headed in from a corner at the far post, but after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper. The Paraguay players had appealed that their goalkeeper Orlando Gill had been fouled and referee Jalal Jayed was advised by VAR (Video Assistant Referee) to check the incident via the pitch-side monitor.
Following a review, Jayed issued a statement to the crowd, explaining that the goal was disallowed because a foul had been committed by Germany substitute Waldemar Anton.”
Thus, the international media reports remarked, “The Paraguayans had two opportunities to win the shootout before central defender Jose Canale converted the decisive spot-kick. Paraguay will progress to the last-16 where they will face the winners of the France and Sweden tie, while Germany is left to reflect on a controversial decision as their wait to reach a World Cup round of 16 will stretch into a 16th year.”
