Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 06: Maruti Suzuki has unveiled an updated Baleno hatchback. It now features Level 2 ADAS technology. Prices start at ₹6.09 lakh, ex-showroom Bengaluru. The company has added several premium features too. This update targets India’s premium hatchback segment specifically.
Level 2 ADAS marks the most significant upgrade. It combines radar and camera-based systems together. The suite includes Advanced Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist. Lane Departure Prevention and Adaptive Cruise Control are also included. High Beam Assist and Vehicle Sway Warning round out the system. Forward Collision Warning and pedestrian detection complete the package. This is driver assistance technology, not autonomous driving.
Design and interior updates accompany the tech additions. Exterior changes include a new NEXWave grille design. A redesigned front bumper and chrome fender garnish feature too. Enigmatic Teal joins the colour lineup as well. Inside, buyers get dual-tone styling and leatherette upholstery. Ventilated front seats and a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ system are included. A premium Clarion sound system adds to cabin technology. Wireless charging with active cooling is another addition. A 360-degree camera, Head-Up Display and Suzuki Connect complete the list.
Maruti Suzuki framed this as deliberate premiumisation, not desperation. Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer for marketing and sales, explained the thinking. The upgrade stemmed from customer understanding, not weak sales, he said. Ethnographic research showed target buyers wanted additional features, he added.
The premium hatchback segment currently averages 50,000 units monthly. Baleno accounts for roughly one-third of that segment. Maruti Suzuki sells around 16,500 Baleno units every month. That places Baleno as a significant contributor to segment volumes.
Growth figures support the company’s premiumisation push further. Banerjee said the premium hatchback industry is growing 17 per cent. Maruti Suzuki, he said, is growing at 28 per cent. These figures reflect management’s own stated assessment. Banerjee expects the updated Baleno to see strong demand. “This car is doing very well,” he said.
Powertrain specifications remain familiar for existing Baleno buyers. The Z12E engine produces 61 kW of maximum power. Peak torque stands at 112.4 Nm for this engine. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual gearbox. An Auto Gear Shift automatic option is also available. Fuel efficiency reaches 23.80 km/l with the manual transmission. The AGS variant delivers 24.77 km/l in comparison.
Banerjee tied these investments to a clear customer logic. The company is investing where its target segment expects it, he said. Whether ADAS and premium features sustain Baleno’s momentum remains to be seen. For now, Maruti Suzuki is betting on premiumisation over price competition.
