Industry Odisha Bureau, Jun 13: The retail inflation of India has reportedly shown a gradual increase with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising to 3.93% in May this year from 3.48% in April as food prices and transport costs go up due to the higher fuel prices.
Media reports quoting data of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released on June 12 showed that “the inflation rate was 3.5% in April.”
It has also been reported that, “the rural inflation rate was higher at 4.25%, while the urban inflation was slightly lower at 3.53%.”
Also, the Cosumer Food Price Index (CFPI) reportedly “saw a significant rise with food inflation reaching 4.78% in May 2026.”
Economists reportedly expect that “the retail goods could go dearer in June 2026 due to further rise in costs”, while the annual CPI inflation is expected to be “between 5% and 5.5% with potential rate hikes during the monetary policy review in October or December 2026.”
Notably, “Retail Inflation, also known as Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation, tracks the change in retail prices of goods and services that the households purchase for daily consumption. It is calculated by comparing the current prices of a fixed basket of goods and services with their prices in a base year, which serves as a benchmark for measuring price changes. In India, the CPI basket includes items such as food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, healthcare and other essentials. The CPI is compiled monthly by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and is expressed as a percentage change indicating the rate of retail inflation.”
