Industry Odisha Bureau, Jul 10: In a bid to aid its goal for cleaner energy by scaling up its nuclear power generation, India has reportedly signed an agreement with Australia yesterday so that it could cater to the needs of the nation in near future.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly announced this yesterday during his visit to Australia, and soon after holding talks with Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
While a joint statement issued by India and Australia reportedly said that, “The uranium export will be exclusively for peaceful purposes”, the Australian Prime Minister in his media reactions reportedly said that, “Australian uranium exports to India will help increase the share of non-fossil fuel power capacity, providing an additional market for the Australian resources sector.”
International media also reported that, “The nuclear cooperation pact between India and Australia was inked way back in 2014, but could not be materialised owing to the deep concerns and assurances that the Australian uranium had to be strictly used by India only for nuclear power generation that could cater to the needs of the Indian populace since India is the world’s most populous country as well as seeks to meet its goal for cleaner energy.”
Reportedly, “Australia has around 28 per cent of the world’s uranium, while India has set a target of achieving 100 gigawatts (GWs) of nuclear energy capacity by 2047.”
