Industry Odisha Bureau, Jun 14: Apart from being in spotlight as well as having hogged the headlines for being an apple of discord or bone of contention between the US administration and its NATO allies when incumbent US President Donald Trump openly advocated for acquisition and control of Greenland, this Arctic Island-cum-autonomus territory of the Kingdom of Denmark has reportedly allured Japan for extracting rare earth from the world’s largest island.
As per international media reports, “Japan is gearing up to despatch a high-level delegation to Greenland comprising of officials from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security and certain trading companies to hold talks with the competent authorities with regard to evaluate possible rare earth extraction from there.”
Notably, “Greenland holds strategic importance due to its location in the Arctic, influencing shipping routes, climate research, geopolitical interests, and claimed to be a rich repository of rare earth.”
Reportedly, US President Donald Trump has evinced keen interest in acquiring and controlling the autonomous territory of Kingdom of Denmark so that the US administration could make the strategic location a crucial US military base in a bid to prevent its adversaries Russia and China from gaining a lasting foothold in the region. While Russia is reportedly having its naval and missile activities, China is also reportedly having its naval activites as well as investment in the Arctic infrastructure.
