Industry Odisha Bureau, May 8: It all appears that the upcoming second grand slam ‘French Open 2026’ is poised to hog the headlines for wrong reasons as top men and women tennis players have reportedly decided to boycott after being offended over the meagre increment in prize money.
While Women’s numero uno Arnya Sabalenka has already announced the boycott decision made by the top players, her Men’s counterpart Jannik Sinner has also reportedly jumped into the ‘boycott’ bandwagon.
Opening his heart on the vexed issue of insignificant increment in the amount of prize money, an unsatisfied Sinner said, “It’s more about respect, you know. Because, I think we give much more than what we are getting back. It’s not only for the top players; it’s for all of us players. Again, from men’s and women’s side, we are very, very equal. I think the top 10 men, top 10 women, we wrote a letter. It’s not nice that after one year we are not even close to the conclusion of what we would like to have.”
Notably, the peeved players reportedly seek for making the prize money 22 per cent of the total revenue at par with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournaments being held.
On the contrary, the organizers of the upcoming French Open 2026 have reportedly enhanced a mere 9.5 per cent more than last year(2025)’s prize money amount following which men’s and women’s singles winners will be rewarded with $3.28 million each. Thus, this has reportedly been the apple of discord making the top tennis players unpleasant and has prompted them to boycott as a mark of discontent
