Industry Odisha Bureau, April 26: Owing to a swift urban economy in India, the National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), has reportedly geared up to provide a “dedicated city-level statistical reports for 47 Indian cities with million-plus populace” for the first time since India’s Independence.
As per media reports, the MOS data will cover two key parameters: “labour force participation” and “status of enterprises” in the selected 47 million-plus-population cities.
While the first key parameter will provide valuable data on “labour force participation rate, worker population ratio, and unemployment rate”, the second one will disseminate necessary data on the “city-level profile of unincorporated sector enterprises, capturing the scale, structure, employment, and economic performance of the urban informal sector”, the media reports elaborated.
MoSPI reportedly stated that the essential data would help in “requisite decision-making governance, interventions in employment and enterprise development, understanding of urban labour markets and the unincorporated sector, and above all, the development of city-level GDP”.
MoSPI also stated that the user-friendly data will be compiled annually and released in the public domain so that the general public, researchers, and policymakers can benefit.
Before finalizing the precious proposal, MoSPI has reportedly sought the views of stakeholders in a bid to sync with the available data in the Periodic Labour Force Survey and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises.
MoSPI concluded that the proposed framework and indicators will be further fine-tuned and purified based on the feedback received.
