Industry Odisha Bureau, April 3: In a bid to “deliver higher intelligence with fewer parameters” along with an improved efficiency, tech giant Google DeepMind has launched its Gemma 4 for laying foundation for building next-generation AI agents.
While the media reported that it is a “new generation of open AI model that offers more powerful tools designed to deliver advanced reasoning and autonomous AI workflows,” Google DeepMind’s official blog claims, “Gemma 4 is designed to deliver higher intelligence with fewer parameters, making it more efficient for real-world applications.”
The blog @GoogleAI posted on its official X handle is quoted hereunder: “Today, we’re launching Gemma 4, our most intelligent open models to date. Built with the same breakthrough technology as Gemini 3, Gemma 4 brings advanced reasoning to your personal hardware and devices.
Here’s what Gemma 4 unlocks for developers:
— Intelligence-per-parameter: Our 31B (Dense) and 26B (MoE) models deliver state-of-the-art performance for their size, outcompeting models 20x their size on
@arena
— Commercial flexibility: Released under a permissive Apache 2.0 license for complete developer flexibility and digital sovereignty
— Agentic workflows: Native support for function-calling and structured JSON output allows you to build reliable, autonomous agents
— Multimodal edge AI: The E2B and E4B models bring native vision, audio, and low latency to mobile and IoT devices
— Long-context reasoning: Up to 256K context windows allow you to process entire repositories or large documents in a single prompt
Whether you’re building global applications in 140+ languages or local-first AI code assistants, Gemma 4 is built to be your foundation.”
As per media reports, “Gemma 4 is to support agentic AI systems which can perform tasks autonomously rather than simply generating text responses.”
Several capabilities designed for AI agents are:
a) Native Function Calling, b) Structured JSON Output, c) Support for System Commands, and d) Integration with External Tools & APIs.
It is further claimed that the above-cited features “allow developers to build AI systems that can not only analyse data, but also trigger workflows and interact with digital tools.”
It is also claimed that Gemma 4 is a “Multimodal AI” and can also “support 140 languages” so that the developers are “enabled to build AI applications for global users.”
Google DeepMind also claims that the Gemma 4 models are “designed to run directly on mobiles and edge devices as the E2B and E4B models are optimised for mobile phones, Internet-of-Things devices and edge computing systems”.
It has also been claimed further that these models can “run offline on devices like smartphones, Raspberry Pi computers and NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano”.
