Industry Odisha Bureau, Sept 16: India’s drug regulator has issued a public health alert against two unauthorised cosmetic products labelled as “Made in Pakistan” after drug tests found excessive levels of heavy metals.
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) identified the products as Goree Beauty Cream and Chandni Whitening Cream. A public notice was issued by CDSCO’s Cosmetics Division on September 8. In which, the regulator said neither product had the required registration certificate for import to India.
According to CDSCO, testing and analysis found heavy metal levels exceeding specific limits. This may pose health risks, including toxic effects.
Products flagged by CDSCO include:
- Goree Beauty Cream – Made in Pakistan
- Chandni Whitening Cream – Made in Pakistan
CDSCO has advised consumers not to purchase or use the two products. It has also warned individuals and establishments against selling, distributing or advertising them.
The regulator has directed the State and Union Territory Drugs Controller, along with its zone, sub zone and port offices, to take steps to prevent the sale of unauthorised cosmetics.
Under India’s Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Cosmetics Rules, 2020, cosmetics manufactured for sale in the country require a license from the State Licensing Authority. Meanwhile, imported cosmetics must be registered with the Central Licensing Authority.
CDSCO has advised consumers to check product labels before purchasing cosmetics. Multiple details of imported products should be checked. These include the manufacturing license number, manufacturer information, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and registration number.
Further, consumers can report suspected labelling violations to the relevant State Drugs Controller or the drugs Controller General of India for imported products.
