Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 13: Orkla India has backed FSSAI’s proposed front-of-pack labelling norms for packaged food. Managing Director and CEO Sanjay Sharma said consumers deserve clear nutritional information. He linked this demand to rising consumer awareness. The broader packaged food industry supports FSSAI’s objective, Sharma said. Yet the debate over format and implementation continues.
FSSAI Labelling Proposal Gains Industry Support
Sharma said the industry is aligned with FSSAI’s intent. The regulator wants consumers to make informed choices. Awareness levels among Indian consumers are rising steadily. Sharma said the industry fully supports this direction. He is also engaged with CII on the issue. According to Sharma, broader industry backing exists for the objective.
Sugar, Salt and Fat Move to Front of Pack
FSSAI’s proposal concerns front-of-pack labelling, known as FOPL. It targets sugar, salt and fat on packaged food. Material describes these as nutrients of concern. The aim is to help consumers spot high levels. The final label design has not yet been decided.
Supreme Court Seeks More Clarity
The Supreme Court recently asked FSSAI for clarification. The query concerns FSSAI’s proposed phased implementation plan. FSSAI has already submitted its recommendations to the court. The matter remains pending before the apex court. Sharma said he would not second-guess the court.
Industry Focuses on Format and Implementation
Sharma said the dispute is not about labelling itself. Industry accepts the need for nutritional disclosure, he said. The real questions concern format and implementation, he added. “The industry is ready for the entire thing,” Sharma said. Companies have made several submissions to FSSAI already. Consultations between industry and the regulator are ongoing.
WTO Notification Forms Part of Regulatory Process
Sharma outlined FSSAI’s standard regulatory process for new rules. It begins with a draft regulation for public comment. Consultations follow with industry bodies and consumer groups. Draft food regulations must also be notified to the WTO. This step reflects India’s international trade obligations. Sharma said he hopes this process will be followed.
Orkla India Highlights Consumer Transparency
Orkla India is part of Norway-based Orkla ASA. Its brands include MTR, Rasoi Magic and Eastern. The company operates in ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat foods. It also sells vermicelli and blended spices. Sharma’s comments reflect the company’s stance on transparency.
Rising consumer awareness is driving demand for clearer labels. FSSAI’s proposal responds directly to that demand. Industry support for the principle appears broad, Sharma said. Yet format and implementation questions remain unresolved. The Supreme Court’s scrutiny adds further regulatory weight. WTO notification and consultations will shape the final rules. How FSSAI resolves these details will matter most.
