Industry Odisha Bureau,13: Xi Jinping outlined a four-point plan for India-China ties. He presented it during talks with Narendra Modi. The meeting took place at the BRICS Summit.
Chinese President Xi Jinping met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday. Their talks occurred during the 18th BRICS Summit. Xi outlined a four-point approach to bilateral relations. He called for the “steady and long term development” of ties. China’s foreign ministry described the discussions as “candid and in-depth.”
Xi Says India and China Are ‘Partners, Not Rivals’
Xi said Beijing views India from a strategic, long-term perspective. “China and India are partners, not rivals,” Xi said. He described each country’s development as an opportunity, not a threat. Xi said institutional exchanges between the countries had resumed. He said bilateral trade had reached a new high, according to his account. Xi said this progress had not come easily.
Xi’s Four-Point Plan for India-China Ties
Xi’s first point called for objective strategic understanding between both sides. He said each country should see the other as a partner. His second point urged win-win cooperation and shared development. Xi called development the “greatest common denominator” between the nations. His third point addressed differences and border peace directly. He urged parallel progress on relations and boundary talks. His fourth point focused on multilateral cooperation between the countries.
Cooperation Includes Trade and Direct Flights
Xi called for greater people-to-people exchanges between citizens. He also supported expanding direct flights between the countries. Xi urged a balanced approach to economic and trade concerns. No new flight routes or trade figures were specified in his statement.
Border Peace Remains Critical
Xi’s third point stressed mutual respect over differences. He urged parallel progress in ties and boundary discussions. Xi called for peace and tranquillity in border areas. Both sides reaffirmed commitment to a mutually acceptable boundary solution. That solution was described as fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable. No settlement of the boundary dispute was announced.
Modi Stresses Mutual Respect and Sensitivity
According to India’s foreign ministry, Modi offered his own framing. He said ties should rest on mutual respect and sensitivity. Modi also cited mutual interest as a guiding principle. He added that “differences should not become disputes.” Modi’s language was not identical to Xi’s four-point framework.
BRICS, UN, SCO and G20 Cooperation
Xi’s fourth point urged support for each country’s BRICS presidency. He called for deeper coordination through the United Nations. Xi also cited the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the G20. He urged joint work on global challenges and fairness.
Closing
Both leaders welcomed progress since their Tianjin meeting in August 2025. They reaffirmed a strategic, long-term approach towards bilateral ties. Renewed diplomatic engagement was evident throughout the New Delhi talks. However, the underlying boundary question remains formally unresolved.
