Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 07: The Odisha government has asked all districts to develop five to 10 small scale tourism initiatives as part of its plan to expand tourism beyond the state’s established destinations.
Chief Secretary Anu Garg issued the directive while chairing a virtual orientation programme for Local Tourism Promotion Councils (LTPCs). This was organised by the Tourism Department under the Odisha Tourism Vision 2036-47.
District administrations have been asked to identify and promote new tourist destinations, heritage sites, natural attractions and more homestay opportunities. This is under the “One District, Multiple Tourism Initiatives” approach. Officials have also been directed to improve basic facilities, sanitation, hospitality, and supporting infrastructure at these locations.
The government expects the district level approach to boost local economies and create employment opportunities. This is particularly for women, youth, MSMEs and self help groups.
The state will also introduce a district tourism ranking system to encourage competition among districts and push administrations to improve tourism infrastructure and visitor experience.
The government is also implementing the Odisha Homestay Establishment Scheme-2025 and updating its eco tourism policies, with a focus on rural employment, hospitality training and better visitor facilities.
During the meeting, Tourism Commissioner-cum-Secretary Balwant Singh presented the roadmap for Tourism Vision 2036-2047. Meanwhile, Director Dipankal Mohapatra outlines the immediate action plan.
