Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 30: As many as 22 people have tested positive for Scrub typhus on Sunday. The outbreak has been reportedly mostly in Sanabagderi village and Palalahada.
Out of 180 swab samples as many as 22 were found infected with the mite-borne disease. Medical teams have been alerted and have visited the areas for the second day today. The sample testing and surveillance by the medical experts is underway.
Scrub typhus is a mite-borne bacterial infection with common occurrence in monsoon seasons. The causative agent being bacteria Orientia tsutsugamushi. The moist conditions are ideal for the mites to grow and infect people. The common symptoms include fever and chills, headache and muscle pain, rash or body aches.
Scab-like dark coloured skin lesions develop at the area infected by the mite. It is a non-communicable disease and is contracted through the bite of an infected chigger.
It is to be mentioned that one person died of the infection, confirmed the test results after his demise.
