Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 12: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved the major infrastructure project. The ₹334.89 crore investment will construct an elevated corridor within Vizag port premises. The corridor spans 3.584 km and connects Convent Junction with the Dock Area. Its primary purpose is separating road and rail traffic within the port.
Currently, Vizag port faces a significant operational bottleneck affecting cargo movement efficiency. Nine major railway level crossings experience approximately eighteen gate closures occurring daily. These frequent closures result from high train exchange volumes within the port. Each gate closure interrupts vehicle movement and delays cargo evacuation operations substantially.
Overall logistics efficiency is affected by the recurring traffic closures. This results in vehicle waiting times extending significantly, and fuel consumption increases during each closure. Subsequently, the operating costs for cargo transporters rise correspondingly, reducing their competitive advantage substantially.
The proposed elevated corridor will eliminate these conflicts through vertical traffic separation. By elevating road traffic above rail lines, uninterrupted vehicle movement becomes possible. This physical separation will reduce internal congestion within Vizag port premises significantly. Smoother cargo flow through the port will become possible and more efficient.
The project includes comprehensive components extending beyond the main elevated corridor structure. The project incorporates associated civil works, electrical installations, and utility relocation comprehensively. Safety installations throughout the elevated corridor and five years of maintenance are provided.
Construction planning will prioritize minimizing operational disruption within Vizag port’s functional areas. Critical dock operations will receive particular attention during the construction phase period. The entire project is scheduled for completion within thirty months of commencement.
